My grandparents’ house in Essex.

I have chosen my great-grandfather’s and grandfather’s home on Arthur Ave. in Essex, Ontario, Canada for this exercise. My great-grandfather,John Hines, and my granduncle, Wm. John (John) Hines built this house when they first came to Essex, prior to the railway explosion of 1907. Like many houses in town at the time, the foundation was moved and the walls were no longer square. My grandfather Wm. Edgar (Bill) lived in this house from the day he was married until the day he died, 60 years later, in 1977.

From this view, the garage is not visible, but it was built by my grandfather entirely from used railroad ties. He and his father worked for the railroad all their lives.
