What’s Up With Blogger Widgets?

I don’t know if it’s just my blog, but I have been having trouble this week with my widgets, and deleted the ones that weren’t working. I got a scare when I deleted one widget and my blog disappeared. I refreshed the page and it was back. Needless to say, I promptly backed up my blog to my hard drive.

I checked the Blogger Known Issues and was surprised to see that there are outstanding issues with the widgets, one widget was actually mal-ware and all of the blogs with the widget were disabled. I am afraid to put any new widgets on my blog now.

Does Blogger check out the safety of the widgets on the site, or can anyone make a widget and upload it for everyone to use? I think they should check out any new widget before they allow users to put it on their site, there are a lot of crazies out there. Who knows, backing up your blog to your hard drive might even be dangerous. I think I’ll start backing it up online to my notebook from now on.

Follow Friday – For Versatile Blogging

The creators of the Viviti web-building site are young Canadian entrepreneurs from British Columbia. I found out about Viviti when it just started, through Bravenet. They were promoting the site and asking for Beta testers.

I started a few sites when in Beta, three months before they put up the total websites worldwide in Sept./08, and there were less than 1000 sites world-wide at that time. By Dec.1/08 when it went into Open Beta and was made public, there were over 5000 sites. It has been out of Beta since April when there were over 10,000 sites. I have seen all of the bugs being worked out and all of the new widgets and improvements that have been requested by the Beta testers. It has come a long way since it’s introduction.

Viviti is an excellent blogging platform, with the ability to create categories for your posts so that you can blog about different topics on one site. It can be personalized with fully editable content boxes, several image boxes, including a Flickr gallery, widgets for social media like Twitter, Facebook Updates and You tube, audio player, Embeded Flash, but it is also great for businesses with business widgets like Paypal and Bookfresh Online Scheduling.

There are lots of themes for your site, or, you can create your own custom theme, there are step by step instructions in the Wiki for less experienced users. You can even make custom favicons (icons that show up on the tabs and address bar) or select from several ready made ones. It is very user-friendly and customizable. You can keep track of your website activity easily without leaving your site. It is easier to customize your site if you can see what the changes look like a soon as you make them. When you are logged in, there is a bar at the top of the page

and a status bar at the bottom that lets you do whatever needs to be done to create and maintain your website.

I have my homepage, My Favourites Place, on Viviti as well as a family reunion site, and my business site, which I’m still working on. I started My Loyalist Heritage, a blog site after it was out of Beta, to see what features are available with a free site. My other sites are “Custom Free Sites” for Beta testers which is the equivalent of a $5.00 mo. site. You can do everything on a free site as the payed versions, there’s less storage and 15 page. maximum but there aren’t any limits on how many free sites you can have.

For anyone wishing to have a more flexible blog, personal or business website, I recommend Check it out, you’ll be amazed at what a few west-coast Canucks have come up with!

Endorsements – What Are They?

I have blogged in the past about several products and services that I use or have tried, this includes research websites, genealogy programs, website builders, web hosts etc. If my understanding of the revised FTC regulations is correct, that would be an endorsement. If you think about it, even #follow Friday on Twitter is an endorsement!

I have only been compensated by one company, not for an endorsement, but for being a Beta tester. I have posted about this company in my blog, so now, do I have to go back and edit all of my posts that mention it with a disclaimer or explanation? This will be a lot of work for some bloggers who have been around for years.

Oh, well, I don’t have to worry, FTC regulations don’t apply here, but Canada is a follower, not a leader, so it’s only a matter of time.

I think I’ll put a disclaimer in future blogs, say something like;

“This post is only my opinion, I was not compensated for endorsing any person, website, product or service in any way. EJBradt“.

Blogging And More At

About Viviti:

“Our goal was to create something easy to use for anyone, but powerful enough for professionals as well. We all use it to maintain our personal blogs, but it can be used for so much more than that.”

Viviti started as a big idea in the small town of Parksville on the West coast of Canada.

What if we threw out the conventional idea of a CMS (content management system) and made it so you could edit your site while looking at it, right in your browser? We were sold on the idea right away, and set out to create it.

After a year of meticulous planning and development we finally launched open beta, and within 3 months were serving thousands of happy customers.

Now Viviti serves personal blogs, small business web sities, news portals, bands, churches, pet groomers, artists, musicians, and… well, you name it. People are flocking to Viviti by the thousands and we’re pleased to keep on doing what we do – enabling people to create and maintain great looking dynamic websites.

What is Viviti?

Viviti is a Content Management System and Website Builder that allows you to easily build your own dynamic website, either by selecting one of our pre-made themes or make your own theme simply by using html and css.

Everything is hosted for you and all management and creation is done in your browser.

Viviti is more than just a blog site, it can be used for a number of different sites, I created a family reunion site here: Fairbairn Family Reunion. There are private pages that are password protected.

I also am in the process of creating an online store as well, here: Earlybird online yard sale. I will have my Ebay listings and Paypal when finished.

But, it is a great blog site as well, with RSS feed. There is a blog search, blog roll of favourite blogs, blog archive, blog comments.

I started using Viviti as a website builder just after it’s Beta release in March of 2008, and have recently started to blog there, after becoming interested in blogging. The free sites can have up to 15 pages.

Viviti has a Wiki too at Wiki.Viviti where there are tutorials on creating your website.

Disclosure: Although has provided a custom free site ($5.00 per month value) for being a Beta-tester, I am not getting anything in exchange for my endorsement of the site.
